Worked example (English)

How can I turn a summary into analysis?

Explain how a specific detail supports an interpretation, rather than only retelling what happened.

  1. Start with a short, original example.

Summary: A character closes the window before speaking. This describes an action.

  2. Ask how the detail creates meaning.

Analysis: Closing the window may suggest a desire for privacy. Support this interpretation with the surrounding passage and consider other explanations.

Use evidence from the actual text. Do not invent quotations, page numbers or context.
